Glenn C. Thomsen, 83, of Valders died suddenly on Dec. 7, 2015, at his home.The funeral will be Saturday, Dec. 12, 2015, at 11:30 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Valders, with the Rev. Erica Cunningham officiating. Burial will follow at Valders West Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church from 9 a.m. until 11:15 a.m. Saturday.Glenn was born on Aug. 22, 1932, in Hubbleton, son of the late Peter and Helen Abendroth Thomsen. He was a 1950 graduate of Lake Mills High School, where he was an all-state football player for the L-Cats. After graduation, he served in the U.S. Army, working in the Signal Corps while stationed in Germany during the Korean War.During his military service, he spent leave time to locate relatives in Denmark, making connections that continue to this day. Four Danish relatives were able to visit Wisconsin and stay with the Thomsens this past summer, due to those longstanding relationships.Following his discharge, Glenn attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, graduating in December 1958 with a degree in poultry husbandry. He remained active throughout his life in the Alpha Gamma Rho agriculture fraternity at the university.He worked in the agriculture industry for many years, including doing sales for Lakeland Egg Cooperative in Valders and for Land O'Lakes. He then worked for American Feeds & Livestock, calling on veal growers for many years until his retirement.He married the former Marlene Brockman on Feb. 28, 1959, at Valders West Lutheran Church and the couple has lived in Valders ever since. They also have operated Thomsen's Thunderbird Hill in Lac du Flambeau for the past 37 years, spending six months a year at the lakeside resort, welcoming their guests.Glenn enjoyed fishing and spending his summers up north, and through his work in sales and the resort, met many nice people and made many friends.He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Valders and the Valders Lions Club, having served as past president and recently being honored with the Melvin Jones Fellow award by the club. Glenn enjoyed traveling, and he and Marlene visited Denmark, Norway, Alaska and Hawaii, along with taking ski vacations in Switzerland and Colorado. They also enjoyed many winter vacations in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, in recent years. He accompanied his family to Washington, D.C., in the spring of 2013 for an unofficial "honor flight," including a visit to the Korean War Memorial.He is survived by his wife, Marlene, of Valders; three sons and daughters-in-law, Brian and Mary Thomsen of Valders, Jon and Debbie Thomsen of Germantown and Bruce and Bernadette Thomsen of Sun Prairie; four grandchildren, Hannah, Isabelle, Eric and Katherine; a sister-in-law, Shirley Thomsen of Watertown; and a special cousin, Lois Richards of Barrington, Ill.Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive.He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Peter and Dorothy Thomsen, Duane and Marian Thomsen, and Carroll Thomsen; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Fred and Marion Brockman.
