William Andrew "Bill" Hjelm, was born to Fritz "Arvid" and Adla "Ada" (Swanson) Hjelm in Smethport, PA, on October 6, 1928.
Bill's early years were spent on a farm in the Allegheny Mountains of Pennsylvania.
Bill graduated High School in 1947 and moved to Denver Colorado, to be near his brother, Rudy, who had contracted tuberculosis.
Bill went to work at the Denver Department of Social Services (DDSS) in 1948, where he divided his time between the Business Office and the Print Shop. In October 1950, Bill was drafted into the US Army, shortly after the beginning of the Korean War. After taking basic training and schooling at Ft. Riley, KS, Bill was sent overseas to Pusan, Korea for 18 months.
He returned to the US in October 1952 and was honorably discharged in November of 1952 at Ft. Carson, CO.
Bill returned to DDSS in 1953 and held a variety of positions until his retirement in October 1990.
In the summer of 1966 Bill met Joyce at a church fellowship group for singles. They wed in July of 1967. Bill and Joyce enjoyed the Colorado outdoors more than anybody and could be found bicycle riding, hiking, downhill, and cross-country skiing any day of the week, well into their late 70's.
Bill also enjoyed singing in various choirs, hunting, fishing, and golfing. Bill and Joyce were very active in their church, volunteering at various church programs and notably spent time with Mile High Ministries.
