In 1865 Norman and Catharine, listed in the census as parents of only one child, still lived in the town of Ellington, in Chautauqua County NY, with a live-in housekeeper, Hester Buckley, from Canada. The fact that they had house help might indicate that Catharine was unwell by that time, as most couples did not have servants. Daughter Harriet by that time was married to Charles T Allen.
Catharine died in Ellington in 1869 at the age of 57, and is buried in Cherry Creek Central Cemetery. Norman, following Catharine's death, moved first to Buffalo to live with Harriet and Charles, and then moved to Iowa along with them and Charles' widowed mother, Emily Farnham Allen.
Norman is interred in Clarksville, Iowa, and although his name appears on the stone in Cherry Creek, Catharine alone rests in their plot there. (For Norman's burial information click on "spouse" link below.)
