Dr. Richart T. Flaherty
‎ ‎ ‎ Rosary for Dr. Richard T. Flaherty, 83, a retired surgeon and 70-year Spokane resident, will be recited at 7 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home.
‎ ‎ ‎ Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church, E402 Boone, where he was a member. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
‎ ‎ ‎ Dr. Flaherty died Saturday at Sacred Heart Medical Center.
‎ ‎ ‎ The son of Thomas T. and Alice (Owens) Flaherty, he was born Aug. 8, 1900, in Seattle.
‎ ‎ ‎ A former professional football player, Dr. Flaherty was on the Gonzaga University football team that played against West Virginia in the East-West Classic of 1922. While he attended Marquette University Medical School he played with the Green Bay Packers.
‎ ‎ ‎ Dr. Flaherty interned at St. Vincent's Charity Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, and took his residency in surgery at San Joaquin Hospital in California.
‎ ‎ ‎ He practiced in Spokane from 1931 to 1968 and had served one year as chief of staff at Sacred Heart.
‎ ‎ ‎ Dr. Flaherty was one of the founders of the Spokane Medical Service Bureau (Medical Service Corporation of Eastern Washington).
‎ ‎ ‎ He was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Flaherty was a member of the Spokane County Medical Society, Washington State Medical Association and Phi Beta Kappa scholastic honorary. He also was a former member of the Spokane Elks Lodge, Athletic Round Table, The Spokane Club and the Knights of Columbus.
‎ ‎ ‎ A member of the Spokane Gun Club, he had been Washington state and national trap shooting champion in the late 1940s and early 1950s.
‎ ‎ ‎ Dr. Flaherty and Madeline Schmit were married June 7, 1928, in Milwaukee, Wis.
‎ ‎ ‎ Survivors include his wife, at the home; four daughters, Mrs. Joseph (Marita) McGowan of San Francisco, Mrs. Lyman (Colleen) Janney of Hannibal, Mo., Sally Flaherty of Seattle and Mrs. Patrick (Sharon) McGinley of Edmonds, Wash.; three sons, Robert R., James G., and William P. Flaherty, all of Spokane; two brothers, Ray Flaherty of Hayden Lake, Idaho, and Dr. Wilfrid Flaherty of Spokane; one sister, Rose Flaherty of Spokane; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
