"The death of Mrs. T. F. Spencer occurred in St Louis yesterday afternoon at 5 o'clock at the home of Mr. and Mrs. B. R. Shore, 4548 Forest Park Blvd. Mrs. B. J. Meek, a niece, was expecting the message, having been informed her aunt was sinking. Mrs. Spencer had been in failing health for some time and in the last few months, a nurse was in constant attendance.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Spencer were active workers in the Baptist church and assisted most generously in the building of the present edifice and its upkeep.

Mrs. Spencer was the last of fourteen children. Living in Chillicothe at this time are her niece, Mrs. B. J. Meek, and two nephews, Scott and George Anderson.

During the nineteen years that Mr. Spencer was landlord of the Leeper House, his faithful wife stood at his shoulder, sharing all responsibilities. They both made friends of the travelers and patrons of the hotel and wherever those may be found today, there will be sadness at the passing of this estimable woman.

Mary Rebecca Harvey was born in Linn County, Missouri on August 2, 1844. She was the daughter of Elijah and Jane Foster Harvey who were pioneer settlers of Linn County, moving there from Howard County in 1836 where they reared a large family.

She was married to Thomas F. Spencer on October 25, 1868 and lived in Chillicothe until her husband's death on September 29, 1904. Since that time, she had made her home with her only child, Mrs. B. R. Shore, living in Columbia for twelve years and in St Louis the last eight years. Early in life, Mrs. Spencer united with the Parsons Creek Church in Linn County, but at the time of her marriage her membership was transferred to the First Baptist Church of Chillicothe where it remained until her death.

Mrs. Spencer is survived by her daughter, Mrs. B. R. Shore of St Louis; three grandchildren, Mrs. E. C. Brownlee of Brookfield, Dr. Don Shore and Thomas Spencer Shore of New York; and two great-grandchildren, Richard and Betty Brownlee of Brookfield.

Citizens of Chillicothe who lived here when the time that the Spencers made their home here, will feel sorrow at the loss of Mrs. Spencer, who had never relinquished her devotion to the hometown and the people whose friendships she valued.

The body of Mrs. Spencer will arrive tonight on the Burlington at 8:47 and will be taken to the J. D. Gordon Funeral Home where it will remain until 12:30 tomorrow afternoon, when it will be taken to the Baptist church. The body will lie in state there until the funeral hour at 2:30. Rev. Brengle will conduct the services and burial will be made at Edgewood." The Chillicothe Daily Tribune, September 9, 1927
