Born in Tarrant Co, Texas, USA on February 27, 1888 to Willis Saams Slaton and Mary Elizabeth Bingham, Effie was the second of five siblings, and the eldest daughter. She had red curly hair like her Grandfather Bingham.

After her parents moved from Texas to Indian Territory in what is now Oklahoma, life became harder for the family. In 1901 her mother died in childbirth when Effie was just 13 with several younger siblings to look after. Her older brother Edd left home soon after that.

Effie Jane became pregnant when she was 17 or 18 and unmarried. She was disowned by her father and left to fend on her own, as told in a letter written many years later by her youngest sister, Ada Elizabeth. It was written to a niece, Lorene Slaton Golden, and was part of a series of letters giving Lorene the family history. I have copies of the letters from my Golden cousins in Dallas. Ada Elizabeth's letter references a cousin who also had a child out of wedlock and tells how her cousin's father (Uncle Will) adopted the baby and took her home. The letter goes on to read; "Not like W. S.... (reference to Willis Saams) He was a son of - - - - , cursed and raved and moved off and left her, you know who (she is referring to Effie Jane) ...moved back to town. When we loaded up I ran to the back door and said "come on sister" and my Dad took the end of the reins (on horses) and threatened to whip me if I didn't come on and get on the wagon. I was afraid of him. I didn't know why we were leaving her."

Effie's younger brother, John Arnold Slaton, chose to stay with Effie and help her through this difficult time. Effie gave birth to a son, Elmer Arnold, on August 12, 1906.

From the reference book "Pre-Statehood Marriages 1902-1907, Bryan County, OK" published by the Bryan Co. Heritage Assn., Inc., P. O. Box 153, Calera, OK 74730-0153, the following information was found on pg. 128: BRANCH, W. F., age 42 married SLATON, Effie, age 18, in July of 1906.
A copy of the marriage certificate obtained in Durant, Bryan Co., OK shows the marriage date as July 20, 1906 and both living in Jackson, Indian Territory, OK at the time.

Whether W. F. Branch was the father of Effie's child is unknown. It is also not known what happened to W. F. Branch, whether they divorced or whether he died.

Effie later met and married Emmett Prince Dorough, Sr. on March 17, 1908 in Midland, TX. E. P. Dorough, Sr. adopted Elmer who then took the surname Dorough. Emmett Prince Dorough was 22 years Effie's senior, and she was his second wife. They had three children together, two daughters and a son; Thrya Mae b. 1909, Emmett Prince, Jr., b. Aug. 8, 1910, and Oneita Elizabeth b. Nov. 28, 1916.

At some point Effie and Emmett divorced, as Emmett remarried a third time and both he and his third wife are buried in Meridian, MS.

Effie also remarried to a Mr. McKinney in Texas, though no marriage record has yet been found with more information. Effie's death certificate was issued as "Effie Jane McKinney, widow", listing the correct parentage, and signed by her son Emmett Prince Dorough, Jr. in Fort Worth, TX. The death certificate states she was buried July 15, 1976 in Greenwood Memorial Park, Ft. Worth, TX. She died of cancer to her left kidney and other complications.

The death certificate also mentions that her occupation had been that of "nurse".
