Two Killed, Two Injured When Car Strikes Tree

Two Cleveland teen-agers were killed outright and two others were injured early Sunday when a car left County Trunk M, a half mile south of Franklin, and uprooted a large tree.

The dead were identified as John A. Logan, 18, the driver, and Miss Dianne Jean Buchberger, 16, a passenger in the front seat of the car.

Injured and reported in "fair" condition at St. Nicholas Hospital today were Thomas Wagner, 17, and Miss Clementine Meyer, 16, also of Cleveland.

Miss Meyer was being treated for a fractured collarbone, a back injury and multiple bruises. Wagner's injuries included a fractured right leg and ankle and lacerations of the scalp and left leg.

It was the first double fatality accident in Sheboygan County this year and raised the county's 1959 highway death toll to five, compared with nine on this date a year ago.

Torn Out Of Ground

Investigating sheriff deputies said Logan's northbound car hurtled off a curve with such force that it tore an 18-inch diameter tree out of the ground, 125 feet beyond the edge of the highway, and then smashed into a smaller tree.

The car, a 1954 Chevrolet two-door sedan, was completely demolished.

Deputies said the uprooted tree tore through the frame metal of the auto and pinned both Logan and Miss Buchberger against the dashboard.

Wrecking equipment from a Plymouth garage had to be used to pull apart the twisted wreckage before the bodies could be extricated.

Miss Meyer and Wagner, who were riding in the back seat, were thrown from the auto after the impact. They landed about 10 feet beyond the wreckage.

Dr. Roman C. Pauly, acting county coroner, pronounced both victims dead at the scene.

He said Logan apparently died of a crushed chest and abdomen. He attributed Miss Buchberger's death to a probable fractured neck and internal injuries. Both died instantly.

Sheriff Harold B. Kroll, who visited the scene of the accident Sunday morning, said the car narrowly missed hitting a large rock, about 30 inches high and four feet long, along the north side of the curve.

He said evidence at the scene indicated that the car, after hurtling a ditch along the edge of the road, may have spun through the air over the rock before crashing into the tree.

Cause of the accident remained a mystery today.

Miss Meyer, who was questioned at the hospital this morning by sheriff deputies, said she was asleep in the back seat of the car at the time of the mishap.

Flags Down Motorist

After being thrown from the car, she stumbled back to the road and flagged down a passing motorist who notified the sheriff's office from a nearby farm home.

Wagner was under sedation at the hospital today and could not be questioned.

Miss Meyer said she and the Buchberger girl had met Logan and Wagner at a wedding dance later Saturday night at the Tourist Inn at St. Wendel.

She said Logan offered to drive her and Dianne to another wedding dance at Laack's Hall in Johnsonville to look for Dianne's sister. They left St. Wendel between 11:30 p.m. and midnight.

The girls spent 15 to 20 minutes at Laack's Hall, while Logan and Wagner waited outside in the car, and then began the return trip to Cleveland.

Miss Meyer told deputies that shortly after they left Johnsonville, Dianne fell asleep in the front seat and she fell asleep in the back. Neither had been drinking, she said.

The accident occurred shortly after 1 a.m.
