Norman Marshall Edwards, Age 49, was born on July 19, 1953, in Portsmouth, VA, and died May 6, 2003, in Oklahoma the result of a helicopter crash. He is the son of Mr. & Mrs. L. Ward Edwards of Winchester, VA and the late Betty Marshall Edwards. His paternal grandparents were the late Mr. & Mrs. Henry Norman Edwards of Farnham, VA, and his maternal grandparents were the late Mr. & Mrs. William Dewey Marshall of Arlington, VA. He is survived by his wife, Theresa Lyons Edwards; one sister, Deborah Lynn Edwards, Monroe, VA; an aunt, Katherine D. Edwards, Farnham, VA; and six cousins. He was preceded in death by an uncle, Norman L. Edwards, Sr. Norman grew up in Blacksburg and Lynchburg, VA. He graduated from E.C. Glass High School, Lynchburg, VA, Tech in Blacksburg, VA, and received an MBA Degree with honors from Oklahoma City University. He entered naval flight training at Pensacola, FL, in 1976, receiving his gold wings in 1977. He was a commander in the Naval Reserve at the time of his death. In 1984, he went to work for U.S. Customs as a pilot. He was also a Lieutenant Colonel in the Civil Air Patrol, a FAA Certified Flight Instructor, a Federal Law Enforcement Officer Flying Drug Interdiction, a Federal Fire Arms Instructor, Director of Operations for Oklahoma Wing of Civil Air Patrol of CAP, and a U.S. Navy Blue and Gold Officer, screening applicants for appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy. Visitation will be Friday, May 16, from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM at Smith & Kernke Funeral Directors. A memorial service will be conducted at 10:00 AM, Saturday, May 17, at First Christian Church in Edmond, OK. Visitation from 7:00 to 9:00 PM, Monday, May 19, at Welch-Marks Funeral Home in Warsaw, VA. A funeral service, with military honors, will be conducted at 10:00 AM, May 20, 2003, at North Farnham Episcopal Church, Farnham, VA, with interment to follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Norman's memory may do so by contributing to the Norman M. Edwards Scholarship Fund for a military cadet at VA Tech c/o Development Office, Blacksburg, VA 24060 or North Farnham Episcopal Church Cemetery Fund c/o Mrs. Mildred Minor, Farnham, VA 22460.
