Douglas E. Cole, 83, of Edgewater, died Wednesday, December 16 at Bert Fish Medical Center. Born in Dallas, Georgia, Doug came to this area in 1944. A graduate of New Smyrna Beach Senior High School, he started Doug Cole Construction in 1964 and ran it until retirement in 2004. A kind and gentle giant who thought of friends and family first, Doug enjoyed fishing and hunting with family and friends.

Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Mae; a daughter, Debra (Robert) Reed of Edgewater; a step-daughter, Barbara (Alvin) Scott of Edgewater; a sister, Frances Hebert of Lafayette, Louisiana; four grandchildren, Richard (Amanda) Cole of Edgewater, Angela (Dan) Wilhoit of New Smyrna Beach, Douglas Toole of Edgewater, Kate Scott of Edgewater; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Richard D. Cole.

A funeral service to celebrate Doug’s life will be 12:00 noon Monday, December 21 at the Settle-Wilder New Smyrna Beach Chapel, with the Reverend John Marsh, Bella Vista Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will follow in Sea Pines Memorial Gardens, Edgewater. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. Monday until service time at the funeral home.
