Lisa Marie Ortuno passed away on December 16, 2015 in Wake Forest, North Carolina. She was the daughter of Joyce and George Meeker, born on Fort Stewart army base in Hinesville, Ga. She grew up in Smyrna, Ga, and spent the majority of her higher education and professional life in Columbia, South Carolina and Wake Forest, North Carolina.

A memorial service honoring her life will be held at 10 o’clock Monday morning December 21, 2015 in The Chapel of Bright Funeral Home. Burial will follow at 2 PM in Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh.

Lisa earned a bachelor’s degree in Biology from Kennesaw State College, followed by a master’s and doctorate degree in Molecular Biology from the University of South Carolina. Her passion was in genetics, which she applied in her career while working with Illumina, Applied Biosystems, and Promega, the three most prominent genetic research and development corporations in the world.

She became a devout Baha’i in 2004 in Columbia, where she quickly became an active and engaged member of the community. Many of these relationships continued to flourish when she moved to Wake Forest and became active and engaged in the Baha’i community there.

Lisa is survived by her father George, her brothers Jason and Chris, and her children Ben, Joseph, and Zoe.
