Cooperstown Man Drowns at Harpt Lake

MANITOWOC – James Leigh, 25, of Cooperstown was reported missing from a swimming party at Harpt Lake in northwestern Manitowoc County at 9:44 p.m. Saturday after Leigh, a non-swimmer, had entered the water in the company of his wife, his sister and brother-in-law. Undersheriff Clarence Meihsner manned the oars and a crew from the sheriff's department dragged the lake for a half hour in the area where Leigh disappeared after allegedly stepping off a dropoff into deep water.

A power unit was rushed to the scene and jailer Eugene Springstube, a SCUBA diver, entered the water with underwater gear and within 10 minutes located the body.

Rites Tuesday

Leigh was pronounced death by Coroner Dr. Theodore Teitgen.

He was born April 28, 1939, at Forest Junction, son of Bernard and Ida Luckow Leigh of Green Bay. He married Janet Zeman, May 7, 1960, at Melnik Presbyterian Church. He was employed by Barbeau Mfg. Co., Green Bay.

Surviving are his wife, a son, Jay, at home, parents and a sister, Judy Leigh, of Green Bay.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Melnik Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Milos Strupl will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call at Knutson Funeral Home, Denmark, until 11 a.m. Tuesday and from noon until time of service at church.
