MRS. W.P. HOBBY, EX-GOVERNOR'S WIFE DIES AT HOUSTON
HOUSTON, Tex. Jan 15. -- Death claimed a brilliant and beloved figure in the social life of Texas in the passing of Mrs. W.P. Hobby, wife of the former governor of the state.
Mrs. Hobby died of apoplexy at the family residence, 3903 Montrose Boulevard, at 1 a.m. Monday. Her death, which proved a shock to a wide circle of friends here and in Beaumont, former home of Mr. and Mrs. Hobby, closes an active career which had its beginning in Washington society, where she was well known in her girlhood.
Of recent years Mrs. Hobby has been active in social and civic affairs. Mr. Hobby is president of the Houston Post Dispatch. He is also publisher of the Beaumont Enterprise and Journal.
Mrs. Hobby's father, Samuel Bronson Cooper, was United States congressman from the Beaumont district for 20 years. He was one of the well known members of the lower house and the daughter, Miss Willie Cooper, spent her girlhood at the capital.
The marriage to W.P. Hobby, then lieutenant governor of Texas, took place May 15, 1915, a short time before he took the governor's chair.
