Paul G. Jaeger, former Kenosha County University of Wisconsin Cooperative Extension Agricultural Agent, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014, at Canterbury Home, Kenosha, his home for the past five years, at the age of 94.
Born in 1919 in the town of Centerville, Manitowoc County, Wis., he was the son of the late Wilhelm and Emma (Doersch) Jaeger. He was educated in a one room school in Cleveland, Wis. Paul attended junior and senior high school in Manitowoc, Wis., and U.W. Madison. He went back to U.W. Madison and obtained his Masters Degree in 1968.
Paul honorably served in the US Army Quartermasters Corp during WWII, in Fort Bragg, N.C., New Guinea and the Philippines. Following the war, he taught Veterans Farm Training in Kewanee, Wis.
In 1955, Paul married his colleague and Home-Economics Agent, Charlotte Trewartha. She preceded him in death in 2000.
Paul was the long-time University Cooperative Extension Agricultural Agent in Kenosha County and Associate Professor with the University of Wisconsin. He came to Kenosha in 1951 as a 4-H agent, and was appointed Agricultural Agent in 1953. During his tenure, he focused on rural-urban issues, serving on the Fox River Watershed committee and the Chicago-Milwaukee Corridor Geographic Study, the Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission, the Governors committee on the future of Bong Recreation area, the site committee for U.W.-Parkside and organized the Gateway Florists Association. He wrote a weekly column, From the County Agents Desk, for the Kenosha News, and in the early days, he appeared on WLIP radio and WISN TV. He was also available to meet the public at the counter in the Extension Office to answer agriculture or horticulture questions. After his retirement in 1980, Paul remained active in dairy herd improvement, and continued working with the annual Kenosha Dairy Breakfast and the Kenosha County Fair.
He was member of Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Kenosha Genealogical Society, the Kenosha County Fair Board, and the Downtown Kiwanis, where he headed the scholarship committee for many years.
Paul was an avid gardener and landscaper. He bestowed bouquets of daffodils and hyacinths on friends, even after he moved to Canterbury Home. He will be remembered by family and colleagues for his dedication, helpfulness and knowledge.
He is survived by two sons, William (Pat) Jaeger of Little Silver, N.J., and Gregg (Barb) Jaeger of Kenosha; his daughter, Teri Jaeger of Reston, Va.; his three grandchildren, Kyle, Casey and Kayla Jaeger; and his nieces, Phyllis Neidinger, Joan Dargis and Janet Krofta.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his three brothers, Walter, Hugo and Clarence Jaeger; and his sister, Adelaide Stoltenberg.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, March 4, 2014, at 1 p.m. at Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2100 75th Street. Private interment will take place in St. Johns Cemetery, Cleveland, Wis. A visitation for Paul will be held at the funeral home on Monday, March 3 from 3:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial remembrances in Pauls name can be made to Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2100 75th St., Kenosha, WI 53143, the Kiwanis Foundation of Metropolitan Kenosha, Inc., P.
