Olavi Toivo Laakso Feb. 19, 1927 - Mar. 25, 2015 LEESBURG, FL. - Olavi ("Ollie") Toivo Laakso , 88, of Leesburg, Florida, known as "Ollie" to his friends, died on March 25, 2015 after a brief battle with cancer. Born on February 19, 1927 in New York, NY, he grew up in Vaasa, Finland. Olavi was a semi-pro soccer player in Finland and continued that interest when he returned to New York, NY as a young man. He met Anna-Liisa Miettinen in New York and they married in 1953. They moved to Sterling in 1958. Olavi was employed by Kaman Corp. in Moosup until his retirement in the 1990s. He was a veteran of the Korean War and was active in local veterans groups in Florida. During his life, Olavi enjoyed deep-sea fishing, gardening and sports. Olavi is predeceased by his first wife, Liisa, and his son, Eric Laakso. He is survived by his wife Delores of Leesburg, FL; daughter Irma Laakso Gregory of South Windsor; and grandsons Shane Laakso and Brent Laakso, both of Florida. Olavi also leaves his beloved dogs, Bubbles and Tiny, who brought him much joy since becoming part of his life. Burial will be private.
