In 1900 he and his parents and his sister lived in an apartment they were renting at 403 Jackson St. #2 in Allegheny, PA--now Jacksonia Street on Pittsburgh's North Side. Also boarding with them was 18-year-old Mattie Owen.

In 1910 he and his mother and step-father lived in a place they were renting at 1131 Pennsylvania Avenue in Pittsburgh. Berthold worked as a brass spinner and Phillip worked as a laborer in a steel mill.

In 1920 he lived in a lodging house at 175 Third Street in San Francisco, CA. He worked as a common laborer.

In 1930 he lived at the Napa State Hospital in Napa, CA. He worked there as a cook.

In 1950 he and three lodgers lived in the rear apartment at 1120 Second Street in Sacramento, CA. He worked as a cook for a catering service for parties.
