JANE ELLEN (DASHEN) CARNEY Jane Ellen Carney, 79, passed away December 23, 2015, at the Oakridge Healthcare Center in Plattsburg, Mo., following a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's disease. Jane was born in Akron, Colo., raised in Douglas, Ariz., and graduated from high school in Crystal City, Mo. She graduated from the University of Missouri (Columbia) in 1958 with a degree in Education. While at Mizzou, she became a member of the Delta Gamma sorority. She was an elementary school teacher in the North Kansas City School District until her children were born and then became a stay-at-home mom to son Mike and daughter Cathy. Later, when Mike and Cathy began attending school, she served the district for several years as a substitute teacher. Jane later accepted a position with Welcome Wagon International as a Sales Trainer and enjoyed the challenge for six years until the travel associated with the job began to interfere with her children's activities. She then commenced her association with the dental office of good friends Richard Lanning and Joy Miller, where she managed the dental practice for 22 years, retiring in 2003. She was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2009 but hardly slowed down at all from volunteer activities and bridge club sessions until 2014. She was an active participant in many charities, including volunteering at North Kansas City Hospital, a leader for both the Cub Scouts and Brownies, Panhellenic Council, the Assistance League of Kansas City, Meals on Wheels, Clay County Clothes Closet, Clay County Women's Association, the Citizen's Association, University of Missouri Alumni Association, and a 50 year member of Chapter JC of PEO. She was ordained as an Elder and a Deacon in the Presbyterian Church, a Sunday school teacher and was a long time member of Gashland Evangelical Presbyterian Church. She loved to travel and was well-known to her friends as always being ready to go anywhere at any time. She enjoyed the Colorado mountains, snow skiing, playing golf, the Arizona desert, oceans, lakes and traveling to Europe, particularly Ireland and Switzerland. Jane was preceded in death by her father, The Reverend G. Grey Dashen and her mother, Bess Foster Dashen. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Jim; her son, Mike (Susan) and daughter, Cathy Luttrell; granddaughters, Ashley Luttrell, Rachel and Sarah Carney; grandson, Colton Luttrell and one sister, Ann Hampton of LaMirada, Calif. The high point of her life was being "Mimi" to her family and taking the grandchildren on numerous "adventures" on Saturday mornings. A visitation will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 27, at Gashland Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 8209 North Oak Street, Kansas City, Mo. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 28, at the church. The family requests that if you so choose, gifts to either the Salvation Army, Hillcrest Ministries or to Oakridge Healthcare, PO Box 247, Plattsburg, MO 64477 in lieu of flowers.
