Van Crashes, Man, 20, Dies of Broken Neck

MANITOWOC – Manitowoc County Sherriff's Department officers are continuing an investigation into the traffic death of a 20-year-old rural Manitowoc man early Saturday morning.

The victim was Bruce D. Holschbach, son of Mr. and Mrs. Orville Holschbach, 5734 County Trunk LS.

Holschbach died almost instantly of a broken neck when the van truck in which he was riding was involved in an accident shortly before 6:30 a.m. two miles south of the city on County Trunk LS.

Roger W. Rauer, 28, Manitowoc, drive and owner of the van, was injured less seriously. He was reported in satisfactory condition at Holy Family Hospital. Officers said he suffered abrasions and complained of neck pains.

According to the report, the van was southbound on LS when it failed to make a curve. The vehicle ran off the west side of the road and then crossed to the east side where it struck a utility pole and overturned before coming to rest on its top. The occupants were removed from the demolished vehicle through a small door area.

Rauen was cited by police for driving while intoxicated. Holschbach was the second person to die on Manitowoc County roads so far this year.
