LEONA DORINE TOWLE HOMEMAKER, WIDELY KNOWN AS ARTIST
Leona Dorine Towle, 84, of Route 123 died Sunday at her home after a brief illness.
She was born in New Gloucester, a daughter of Burham W. and Marguerite Weymouth Tufts, attended schools there and graduated from New Gloucester High School in 1933.
On May 19, 1934, she married Merle L. Towle, who died June 11, 1985.
For many years, Mrs. Towle resided in Brandon, Fla., where she was a member of Apostles' Lutheran Church.
A homemaker all of her life, Mrs. Towle had an interest in oil painting and taught art in Florida for 35 years.
Mrs. Towle was a member of the Brandon Area Art Club and received numerous juried awards from best-in-show to the club's prestigious President's Award. Her works are in private collections throughout New England, Florida, Massachusetts, Michigan, California and Tennesee. She painted in the realist tradition, using oils on canvas, and drew from the rural countryside and sea for subjects.
Since her retirement, her works have been exhibited in The Curtis Memorial Library, the Harpswell Town House and in the Harpswell Garden Club's annual art exhibitions. She also enjoyed gardening and bingo.
Surviving are a son, Gregory G. Towle of Winter Haven, Fla.; a daughter, Roxlyn C. Yanok of South Harpswell; a grandson, Thomas A. Yanok of Boston and North Conway, N.H.; and a granddaughter, Judith Yanok Boos of North Conway, N.H.
A private service will be held in Lower Gloucester Cemetery, New Gloucester. A gathering in celebration of Mrs. Towle's life will be held at a date and time to be announced. Arrangements are by Stetson's Funeral Home, 12 Federal St., Brunswick.
