August Last, County Supervisor, Is Dead
VETERAN COUNTY BOARD MEMBER IS VICTIM OF STROKE AT TWO CREEKS
Funeral Friday for Member of the County's Highway Body

August Last, 58, veteran member of the county board of supervisors and also a member of the county highway committee, died at 5 a.m. today at his farm home in the town of Two Creeks, following a stroke that he suffered during the night. Summoned to his bedside early this morning, Mrs. Last found her husband breathing heavily. He passed away before the arrival of a physician.

The death of Mr. Last proved a shock to the community where he resided and to his fellow members on the county board and highway body. He was active up to the very end. A week ago Saturday he made the trip with the highway committee and Manitowoc city officials to Madison in an effort to gain support for the Waldo boulevard extension eastward for this city to connect with Memorial Drive to Two Rivers. Last night he played cards in a small family gathering at his home and did not complain of feeling ill when he retired.

Funeral services for the deceased have been set for Friday afternoon, August 5, the same date the county board is to meet in the city to inspect the new county workshop and machinery building at Rosemere overhead and the tuberculosis sanitarium at Whitelaw. The board will probably arrange to complete this inspection trip by noon and attend the funeral of Mr. Last in a body at Two Creeks in the afternoon, returning to this city to hold its business session after the services or else adjourning to a later date.

Veteran Board Member
Mr. Last served for nearly 20 years on the county board. He was first elected as supervisor from the town of Two Creeks in 1908 and served continuously until 1924 when he retired and was succeeded by Werner Schmoock. The latter served … (illegible line)..again returned to the county board in 1927 and served continuously since that time.

Before the present highway committee was organized, Mr. Last served several terms on the regular road and bridge committee of the county board in his earlier years on the board. He was named to the present commission in 1928 to succeed Nelson Le Clair of Two Rivers and had served since then on that important committee. Ferdinand Schneider and Charles Drumm are the two other members of the county highway committee.

In addition to his service on the county board Mr. Last was also honored by his township in election to town offices and for years served as a member of the school board in the district where he resided. The deceased was honored many times by the Two Creeks electorate by whom he was held in high esteem.

Born in Two Creeks
Mr. Last was born in the town of Two Creeks, February 6, 1874, and grew to manhood in the town. He engaged in farming and was married there to Miss Minnie Kracht, February 23, 1898. She survives him with one son, Carl, on the homestead farm, four daughters, Mrs. Walter Jindra, Two Rivers, Mrs. Roland Harpt, Mishciot, Mrs. Raymond Vogt, Two Creeks, and Eva, at home. Two sisters, Mrs. John Myer and Mrs. Guido Berger, Two Rivers, a brother Louis of Winnebago, Ill., and four grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 1:30 from the home in Two Creeks and at two o'clock from the St. John's Lutheran church in Two Creeks with burial in the cemetery in the town of Mishicot. Rev. Grundemann will be in charge of the services.
