Rev. John W. Mattek

Rev. John W. Mattek, 70, 305 W. Redwood St., Sturgeon Bay died at his residence Monday, March 11, 1996. He was born Dec. 24, 1925 in the town of Two Creeks to the late John and Cecilia (Riha) Mattek. He attended and graduated from Northwestern Preparatory School and Northwestern College, Watertown and the Lutheran Seminary at Thiensville. He married Elsie A. Zierzow, April 22, 1950.

Pastor Mattek was ordained and installed as Pastor in his home church, St. John Lutheran Church, Two Creeks and also was Pastor at St. John Church, Gibson. After serving four years at those two congregations, he accepted a call to Faith Lutheran Church, Fond du Lac. After 10 years there he was called to Trinity Lutheran Church, Kaukauna. In August of 1978 he was installed as Pastor at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sturgeon Bay, where he served until his death. Pastor Mattek was Chairman of the Fox River Valley Pastoral Conference for six years and was a Circuit Pastor in the Appleton area. He was a member of the District Stewardship Committee and served the Synod and his District on the Special Ministries Board.

He is survived by his wife, Elsie and ten children: Edith (Donald) Priebe, Appleton; Rev. John (Ruth) Mattek, Waukesha; Naomi (Mark) Brunner, Belleville, Ill.; Rev. James (Sue) Mattek, Findlay, Ohio; Douglas (Debbie) Mattek, Cedar Grove; Paula (William) Heiges, Grafton; Timothy (Heidi) Mattek, Neenah; Philip (Amy) Mattek, Green Bay; Joel (Barb) Mattek, Lincoln, Neb.; Rebecca (James) Rahn, Neenah; 45 grandchildren; and one brother, Floyd (Marcella) Mattek, Blissfield, Mich.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Earl; sister-in-law, Mayme; and two grandchildren, Steven and Jill Priebe.

Friends may call at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sturgeon Bay, from 2 p.m. Wednesday until time of service. Funeral service 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 13, 1996 at the church with the Rev. Douglas Engelbrecht, President of Northern Wisconsin District, WELS, officiating. Burial in Mach Cemetery, Two Creeks. Forbes Funeral Home, Sturgeon Bay is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be given to the Wisconsin Synod Special Ministries or Wisconsin Synod Scholarship fund in his memory.
