She was born October 21, 1915, in the town of Liberty, daughter of the late Otis and Emma Marken Berge. Irene attended Cedargrove Elementary School and graduated from Valders High School with the class of 1931. She then attended Wisconsin State College, Whitewater, graduating with the class of 1935. She taught business education in Osseo and Nekoosa and then farmed in the town of Liberty, Irene was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church Women, Sons of norway and the Wisconsin Women for Agriculture. Irene was interested in philately, gardening and the day to day operation of the family farm.
