Lucille Johnston was born on December 26, 1912 in the town of Cato, daughter of the late Otis and Ida Qualley Johnston. She attended school in Valders. On April 22, 1930, she was married to Earl O. Berge in Waukegan, Ill. He preceded her in death on November 24, 1987. She worked together with her husband on the farm, and also helped him with his insurance business. She loved cooking, sewing, and sewed many clothes for her grandchildren. She also lovingly took care of her husband during the 12 years of his illness. She was a former member of Cedar Grove Homemakers, Valders West Ladies Aid and a lifetime member of Faith Lutheran Church.
