Mrs. Cohalan was born Ellen O'Leary to Cornelius and Mary McCarthy Cohalan in the County Cork in 1842. She arrived in this country in 1857 and lived with an uncle, Rev. John McCarthy who was in charge of a parish in Brooklyn. In 1861 she married Timothy Cohalan. She bore twelve children, seven survived. Mrs. Cohalan died at her home, 128 Convent avenue.

Survivors include her children: Daniel F., Michael J., John P., Timothy E., Dennis O'L., Aileen Cohalan and Mary (Mrs. James) Dyer.

The funeral was held at John P. Cohalan's residence, 706 St. Nicholas Ave. Solemn requiem mass was at Church of Annunciation, 131st St. and Convent Av. Interment in family plot in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Middletown, Ny.
