Graveside services for Blanche Leota Nelson of Grass Valley will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday at the Grass Valley Masonic Cemetery on Kidder Avenue. Andy Owens will officiate.

Mrs. Nelson died Wednesday, Aug. 21, at Spring Hill Manor Convalescent Hospital in Grass Valley. She was 106.

She was born July 16, 1896, in Golden, Colo., to David and Mary (Haines) Ballanger. She was the youngest of nine children. She married Earl D. Nelson in 1915, in Golden, Colo. They moved to Southern California and then to Grass Valley, where her husband died at an early age. She worked at the Grass Valley Laundry and Dry Cleaners and moved to Berkeley for a few years, where she worked for Berkeley Dry Cleaners. She later moved back to Grass Valley.

She was a past matron of the Albany Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, and a life member of Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, where she volunteered many hours. She made puppets for the children who were patients at the hospital. She enjoyed watching birds, sewing, gardening, cooking and playing cards.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Letha and J. Don Baker of Grass Valley; daughter, Melva Reid of Walnut Creek; grandson, Jay Bennett of Orinda; great-grandson, Bradley Bennett of Corte Madera; great-granddaughter, Stacey McCormick of Orinda; and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl D. Nelson.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hooper and Weaver Mortuary.
