Mary was the paternal granddaughter of James Marvin and Sarah Malinda Springer Lumpkins, both of whom were native Tennesseans.
In time, Mary and W. E. Smith became the parents of seven children: Claudie Lorene, Noble Franklin, Douglas Womack, Ruby Gladys, Hoyte, Anna Rebecca and James Lindsey Smith.
Along with her two children, Hoyte and Anna Rebecca, Mary died in the Flu Epidemic of 1919. She, Hoyt and Rebecca share a common grave at Cedar Hill Cemetery near Pleasant Point in Lawrence Co., Tennessee.
