Samuel was the son of William Newberry and Mary Ann (Muggleton) Newberry. He emigrated with his parents to the Northwest Territories (now Saskatchewan) in 1892. His father died in 1893, and his mother continued the homestead work until 1902 when she moved the family to Victoria, BC. Samuel applied for a homestead in 1897 and worked it receiving the patent for it in October 1901. It included a 12 foot square house valued at $25, plus 14 acres in crops.

Samuel married Lillian Bounds in Van Nuys, CA. It is estimated the marriage was after 1922. He worked for the Public Works in Van Nuys until at least 1937.

At some point he moved back to Victoria. His obituary does not mention Lillian, so it is assumed she died prior to his death, and perhaps even in California.

He was survived by two brothers Albert E and John both of Victoria.
