Gerald F. Groswold, a Denver native and prominent retired Ski Industry Executive, died on November 26 in Denver from complications of pneumonia. He was 84.

Groswold graduated from the University of Denver with a J.D. in 1954 and an MBA in 1955. He practiced law in Denver from 1954 to 1975. During that time, Groswold also served in numerous volunteer roles for the sport of skiing. He was a volunteer member of the Winter Park Recreational Association from 1959 to 1975, and was its Chairman from 1969 to 1975. Other leadership roles include founder of the Winter Park Nordic Ski Jumping School, Secretary and member of the Alpine Race Committee for the VII Winter Olympics held in Squaw Valley, California in 1960, a member of the 1976 Denver Olympics Committee, Chairman and member of the Board of Trustees of the Colorado Ski Country USA, and Vice President of the Organizing Committee for Eighth InterSki held in Aspen, Colorado in 1968.

In 1975, Groswold was appointed President and CEO of Winter Park Resort, a position he held for 22 years until his retirement in 1997. During that time, he oversaw the development of the Mary Jane mountain as well as the Vasquez and Parsenn expansions, and the master planning for the Winter Park Village. He was instrumental in the creation of the Winter Park Handicap Ski Program, which evolved into the National Sports Center for the Disabled. Groswold was the Team Leader for the first U.S. Disabled Olympics team to compete in the 1980 Winter Paralympics in Geilo, Norway.

Groswold has been honored as a leader in the ski industry with his induction into the National Ski Hall of Fame in 1986, the Colorado Ski Hall of Fame in 1987, the Denver and Colorado Tourism Hall of Fame in 2000, and the Colorado Business Hall of Fame in 2005. In recent years, Groswold has served on four of the University of Denver's Colorado Strategic Issues Panels.

Groswold was preceded in death by his daughter Karen Hawley. He is survived by his brother Thor Groswold Jr., daughters Kathy Johnson and Karol Groswold, longtime companion Sherry Shelton, seven grandchildren, and former wife Mary Ann Groswold. A Celebration of Life will be held in the spring of 2016.
