Emery's written name and signature on his WWI Draft card on June 4, 1917 was Emery Marvin Byrd. Earlier, on July 26, 1911 when he married Mary Chamberlain in Appanoose County, Iowa, his name was E. M. Byrd, and his parents were listed as John Byrd and Donan Dillon.

In earlier census years, Emery was listed with different given names in the household of John B. and Dora A. Byrd. In the 1900 Federal census for Callaway, Missouri his given name was John E., a 12 year old son (born Feb. 1888). On March 1, 1905 in the Kansas State Census Collection, 1855-1925 for Douglas County, Kansas his given name was Ezra, a 17 year old son.

In later years (except for Henry in the 1920 Missouri Federal census records with wife Mary, and sons Byron and Eugene), Emery's given name was listed as Emery or Emery M. or E. M. Byrd. This included the 1930 and 1940 California Federal census records, US WWII Draft Card, 1956 Santa Ana, CA and Long Beach, CA 1961 City Directories, US Soc Sec Applic & Claims Index and SSDI.

However, in one private family source, his name was also listed as John Milton Ezra Byrd. To date, I am unable to find a satisfactory reason or source for this name, or indeed why his given name became Emery Marvin in later years.

Death notice in the Independent newspaper, page 29 in Long Beach, California on February 24, 1970: "BYRD - Emery M., 3737 Atlantic Avenue. Survived by wife, Mary; sons, Byron and Gene; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Private service at Dilday Family Chapel."

Probably buried in a cemetery in Los Angeles, California.
