He had a private law office from 1827 to 1830 and from 1834 to 1837. He was the Prosecuting Attorney of the 7th Indiana Circuit from 1830to 1832. Then, he served as a Indiana State Representative from 1832 to 1833. From 1837 to 1841, he was the Presiding judge of the Indiana 7th Circuit. From 1841 to 1842, he held the position of Commissioner of the United States Land Office in Washington, DC. On April 26, 1842, President John Tyler nominated him for the position of Judge, US District Court, District Indiana. On May 2, 1842, the Senate confirmed his nomination, and he received his commission on the same day. He held that position until his death.

He married Susan Mary Rudd on 3 Nov 1841 in Washington County, Kentucky. She was born 8 Jan 1820 in Kentucky and died 3 Dec 1853. They had 6 children together: Robert Palmer Huntington, Mary St. Clair Huntington, Mary Louise Huntington, Gertrude Huntington, Christopher Huntington and Hettey Key Huntington
