The father of John William Cotteral was George Cotteral. His professional life was spent in construction and building in northwest Missouri. He married Mrs. Emma Wagner Sanborn of Pickering, Missouri on December 19, 1894 in Maryville, Nodaway, Missouri. Emma and John had twin daughters, Donnie and Bonnie who went on to distinguished academic careers following studies at the Teachers College of Columbia University, New York City. The main cause of his death was secondary bronchial pneumonia.
