From the Grand Island, NE. "Independent" Newspaper:
The driver of a pickup failed to stop at the marked intersection of St. Paul and Chapman roads Sunday, causing an accident that killed one of his passengers, according to the Hall County Sheriff's Department.
Corey Carstens, 22, of Lincoln, was in stable condition at St. Francis Medical Center Monday, according to a nursing supervisor.
The 1998 Dodge Ram pickup Carstens was driving north on St. Paul Road ran the stop sign and collided with a 1995 Dodge Intrepid early Sunday morning, Sheriff's Chief Deputy Chris Rea said.
Carstens and one of his four passengers, Kelley Press, 34, of Grand Island, were ejected from the pickup. Press was pronounced dead at the scene, Rea said.
Christopher Beecham, 23, of Lincoln, Nicholas Hannah, 22, of Lincoln, and Celeste Loseke, 25, of Grand Island, were also passengers in the pickup. They were all transported to St. Francis on Sunday. Hannah and Loseke were treated and released, and Beecham was admitted and released on Sunday, according to a nursing supervisor.
All five people were seated inside the pickup's extended cab, Rea said.
Chrystal Moeller, 20, of rural Grand Island, was in good condition Monday at St. Francis. She was driving the Intrepid, which was eastbound on Chapman Road when it collided with the pickup. Both vehicles came to rest in the northeast ditch, with the pickup landing on its top.
Moeller was alone in her vehicle and was wearing restraints at the time of the accident. Only one person in the pickup was using a seat belt, Rea said.
Excessive speed was not a factor in the accident. Rea said both vehicles were driving at the speed limit or slower when the accident occurred.
The preliminary investigation indicates Carstens had been drinking alcohol, and investigators are waiting for test results, Rea said. Due to pending charges, he declined to comment on what led investigators to believe that alcohol was the probable cause of the accident.
