CROM, WYNONA NITZ, 93
Melrose - Wynona 'Nonie' Crom, 93, peacefully left the bounds of this earth the evening of December 6, 2014. Her wish to stay at her lakeside home near Melrose Florida was honored and she passed in her own bedroom in the care and comfort of family and friends.
She now joins her sister Enid, beloved son Duff and husband Ted. 'Nonie' was born in Sandusky, Ohio in August of 1921 to Frank and Wynne Nitz. She moved to Gainesville to live with her sister Enid, in 1937, after the death of their mother. She finished her formal education at Gainesville High School. She quickly became an avid Gator Fan and had attended virtually every football game until her health declined prior to this season. Her first employment was with the UF Agriculture Department as a stenographer and her evenings were filled with dancing with 'our boys in service', who were training at Camp Blanding. During a dance at the old Glen Springs Pool and dance floor, she met her future husband, Theodore R. Crom, whom by the way, couldn't dance a step.
She will be missed by her many friends and the members of past and present clubs and groups including the Rebel Lanes and Palm Lanes Bowlers, Melrose Homemaker's Club, Alachua County Home and Community Education - UF IFAS Extension, The Gator Boosters, The Gainesville Has Been's Club, Historic Melrose Inc., and the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors.
Nonie raised four sons and is survived by Theodore Paul (Debbie) of Cross Creek, Frank Gary of Gainesville and Brady Leigh (Lisa Stanley Merrow). Her youngest son Duff Newcomb sadly predeceased her in 2007. Also surviving Nonie are her nephew Jim Storter and family, niece Ginger Childs and family, and her husband's nephews and nieces out west.
Nonie also supported her husband in building Crom Corporation into a successful construction business as well as his hobby in antique clocks and clock tools which gave her the opportunity to travel around the US as well as many European and other countries.
In 1972 they finally began work on their retirement lake place home near Melrose, replacing the one bedroom, one bath cabin in which the family had spent their summers. If that seems cramped for a family of six, imagine the hot 'closed windows no air' car trip from Gainesville to Melrose with Nonie driving her four kids, four cats and one dog, with baggage for 3 months.
A memorial service for Nonie will be held on Saturday, December 20th, 2014, at 2:00pm, at the First Methodist Church; 419 NE 1st Street; Gainesville, FL. The family will receive guests prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Nonie's name to Haven Hospice; 6400 St. Johns Ave; Palatka, FL 32177 (386-328-7100) or the Hospice of your choice. Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers during her final months.
