Bertha Mandelkow was the oldest child of Christian and Wilhelmina Mandelkow. She was born in Germany and immigrated to the United States with her parents and brother, Herman in the 1870's. The family first settled in Ohio and then traveled to Iowa where they eventually made their home near Avoca, where Chris and brother Herman farmed. Bertha married William Preuss (Yohnka) in 1885 and they were blessed with two children; Anna and William. But in 1891, William abandoned his family and started a new life in Washington state, using his real last name of Yohnka. Bertha was left with two small children to raise and lived with her mother until she married again in 1898.
