Donald F. Abel, 94, of Marshall, Ill. passed away at 10:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 7, 2016, in Union Hospital at Terre Haute, Ind.
A loving husband, father, and grandfather, he was a retired Clark County farmer and had owned and operated elevators in Marshall and Paris.
Don was born Aug. 31, 1921, in rural Marshall, Ill., the son of Frederick and Marie Schafer Abel. He married Betty J. Abel on Oct. 1, 2002.
Surviving him are his children, Pamela (Rodney) Overpeck of Kingman, Ind., Donna Gerhardt of Springfield, Ill., Michael (Mary Ann) Abel of Atlanta, Ill., and Anita (Gary) Heard of Aledo, Ill; a sister, Rosemarie Stoelting of Springfield, Ill.; grandchildren, Arnold Overpeck, Rodger Overpeck, Julie DelReal, Coy Overpeck, Gretchen Gerhardt, Gustave Gerhardt, Gabriele Miller, Heather Tabor, Bonnie Rooney, Matthew Heaard and Emily Heard; 12 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews, a brother, Raymond "Bud" Abel, preceded him in death.
He served this nation in the Army Air Corps during WWII. He was a faithful member of the Emmanuel United Methodist Church where he served as Sunday school superintendent and a Sunday school teacher for many years. He was a member of Clark County Post #90 of the American Legion. He served as a director of Marshall Mutual Insurance Co., for over 50 years.
Services in honor of his life will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Pearce Funeral Home in Marshall, with the Rev. Melly Momo officiating. Burial will be in the Marshall Cemetery with military graveside rites. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday.
