Born in Roscommon, Ireland, Hugh Brennan entered the Carmelite Order in Kinsale, making his profession of vows on September 24, 1950. Ordained priest at Aylesford Priory on July 20, 1958, he served as Prior Provincial of the then Anglo-Welsh Province from 1969 to 1975 and from 1981 to 1983, when he was elected to serve at the Order's Curia in Rome as Councillor General and Bursar General from 1983 to 1989.

During his life as a Carmelite, Father Brennan lived in a number of houses and served in a variety of apostolates and leadership roles. He died peacefully in the early evening of February 10, 2014.
