Heiress, Philanthropist, daughter of Elliot Fitch Shepard and Margaret Louisa Vanderbilt. She attended private schools in New York, and on February 5, 1891 Maria married William Jay Schieffelin, they had nine children. she was honorary member of the board of the Y.M.C.A. and formerly a director. she was a leader at the Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church, she was active in the American Committee for Christian German Refugees in 1939, and of the executive committee for Friendship House, a leader in assistance for the physically handicapped. and in 1944 Maria although a republican, was one of the thirty-eight prominent women who wrote open letters to women voters urging the re-election of President Franklin D Roosevelt on his basis of foreign policy. she and William celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1941. Maria died in her home of a cerebral hemorrhage just before her 78th birthday.
