Robert Emmett Gregory, Sr. was born in Chesterfield County, Virginia on Dec. 12, 1852 as the first of eight children to a farmer, George Cox Gregory and Margaret Willson. He married Laura Elizabeth Hare (1860-1898) on April 19, 1882 and they had two children, Lena Hare Gregory (Gerhardt) (1883-1961) and Robert Emmett Gregory Jr. (1885-1919). Laura died on July 17, 1898. He remarried to Ellen E. Dillard (1872-1941) on Feb. 4, 1900 per the marriage notice in the Feb. 5th, Richmond Times Dispatch. He was a popular motorman on the Richmond Railway and Electric company per his 1900 marriage notice. Per the July 19, 1913 Richmond Times Dispatch obituary, he was brought to the State Insane Asylum Williamsburg, Va. on July 1, 1913 and he died there on July 4, 1913. His death was due to status epilepticus (frequent seizures) caused by epilepsy per his death certificate. There was confusion at his death as to his identity as another patient had been admitted on the same date as he was. This led to him being buried in the wrong cemetery under the wrong name. The error was later corrected and he was reburied in the correct cemetery.
