James Edwin Stubbs was born near Richmond, IN, 23 Jun 1856. His parents were John Townsend and Esther Bailey Stubbs. Known as either Edwin or JE, he was the oldest of thirteen children born to them. On 23 Sep 1880, he married Martha (Mattie) Ellen White at Hesper Quaker Settlement in KS. Seven children were born: Arthur Garfield, J Raymond, Herbert White, Della Catherine, Stella, Hazel, and Lucile. Mattie died in 1903 at the age of 45. About a year later, at the ages of 48 and 34, JE married married Florence Eleanor Stewart in Lawrence, KS at the home of his brother, Walter Roscoe Stubbs on 16 May 1904. Two children were born to them: James Edwin, Jr,, and Donald Stewart.
JE Stubbs was raised a Friend. In the home he maintained a family altar, and daily offered his devotions to his Maker. His was the heritage of a fine Christian father and mother, and his character was of the noblest. You never heard him speak unkindly of another. He was the personification of gentleness, of kindness, and of integrity.
