Martha Anne Ulrich (Martie) passed away very peacefully in her home in Marshall 01-11-2016. Martie was the mother of Sandi (Ulrich) Dobbins, wife of Dr. Jim Dobbins. Martie moved to Marshall in 1999 after the passing of her husband, Dr. John L. Ulrich, both of Dearborn, Michigan. She moved to Marshall to be closer to her only child, Sandi, and her family.

Martie was born in Joy, Ohio on 01-30-1920 to Clarence and Leilia Davey. She was the fourth of five children. She grew up in Bremen, Ohio where her father worked for the Toledo and Ohio Railroad. Martie graduated from the local high school and moved to Sanston, VA to live with her sister and brother-in-law. She joined Leyfield and Parker Ford as their head bookkeeper. Martie consistently enjoyed keeping meticulous financial records for several companies over time and for their family's personal accounts.

Martie met her dearly loved husband, John, at an officers' dance in Virginia Beach, Virginia during World War II. Their daughter, Sandi, was born in Spokane, WAon 01-12-1949. John, always wanting to attend medical school, completed his pre-medical studies at Gonzaga University in Spokane at the age of 38. The family moved to Omaha, Nebraska in 1956 where John attended medical school at Creighton University. John secured a residency position at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit where he completed his specialty training in dermatology. With much help from Martie, John established his dermatological practice in Dearborn, Michigan where he practiced until 1985. Martie's family always admired the sacrifices she made to help John reach his goals.

Martie loved helping John in his medical office, gardening and participating in activities at Ward Presbyterian Church in Northville, Michigan. During their retirement years together, John and Martie, overwhelmingly loved their grandchildren, Jim, John and Jennifer (London). They were extremely active members of Gideon's International, where Martie served with the women's auxiliary and John served as state president for several years.

One of their dearest loves was their lake home at Spirit Lake, Idaho that they built in 1950. The family traveled there each summer until 1986. During all their travels, "the lake" as they called it, was their ever- constant touchstone to their cherished Pacific Northwest.

Martie is survived by her younger brother, Wayne, her daughter, Sandi (Ulrich) Dobbins; her son-in-law, Dr. Jim Dobbins; her grandchildren, Jim and Miranda (Zirbel), John and Jennifer (Brakel); Jennifer and Elliott London; her great grandchildren, Elizabeth and Anna London; Daniel and Matthew Dobbins and a number of nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will occur on Thursday, January 14 at 11:00AM at West Eckford Cemetery, Eckford Township on Homer Road (19 ½ Mile Road).

In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to Gideons International. Kempf Family Funeral Homes will assist with donations.
