She was born as a posthumous child and raised by her mother.  A strong and determined young woman, she became a registered nurse, graduating from St. Luke's School of Nursing in St. Louis.

Through the years, she recognized a great need and addressed this by organizing the Fancee Free Manufacturing Company which sold her patented maternity undergarments. The styles of the 1940s and 1950s were rather awkward and stodgy looking, and were without delicacy or embellishment. Her fellows knew her to have an assertive enthusiasm for her products: Maternity and nursing bras, garter belts, and lightweight girdles.

Across the country, her line sold heavily in leading department stores. Ironically, as the baby boomers began to arrive, doctors encouraged women to bottle fed their babies, for reasons that seem to be inexplicable today. Sales dropped before her eyes, and she gradually withdrew her products.
