Around 1912, John followed his brothers Eustache and Peter to Duluth where in 1916 he married Myrtle Estelle Murray. Except for a short period back in his home county in Michigan, John & Estelle spent their lives in Duluth. John was employed by Duluth, Missabe and Northern Railway (DM&N) and later the Zenith Furnace Division of Interlake Iron Corporation.

John's paternal ancestral line (Barbary/Barbery) traces directly to the early settlement of 'New France' (Quebec).
