Don McKenzie, 83, passed away after an illness in his retirement home in Winter Haven, FL, Jan 7, 2016. During his last days he was surrounded by family including his wife, two daughters, and sons-in-law, brother and sisters, 7 grandsons and 2 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his youngest daughter, Claire McKenzie Blastic.

He received his Doctorate in Education from University of Nebraska. His thesis was the rationale for establishing the ESU system in NE. Among his many positions was Superintendent of Decatur Public Schools, Decatur, NE at the young age of 26. He went on to work at community colleges, the New York State Dept of Education, various anti-poverty and grant programs, and eventually as a home builder.

While in NE working on his Doctorate, he also served with a distinguished group from the University, the Unicameral legislature, and the NEA, and helped develop legislation enabling the establishment of not only the Educational Service Units, but also the Community College System in NE.

He spent his life as an educator, teacher and superintendent, and in working to empower people and improve lives. He served as Past Chair of the Winter Haven Democratic Committee.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
