J. Alton Ross, 88, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his beautiful wife and 4 children on Wednesday, January 13, in Saint George, Utah. Alton was born in Cardston, Alberta, Canada on May 24, 1927, to Verda Elien and Robert Earl Ross. He and his lifelong sweetheart were married in the LDS Idaho Falls Temple on April 15, 1949.
Alton was raised in Lethbridge, Alberta, and was active in the LDS faith. He enjoyed scouting, playing percussion in the drum and bugle corps, and playing the piano. He received bronze, silver, and gold medals in rifle marksmanship in high school. Al was a top student in his 1945 graduating class of 13 students. He attended BYU for one year, transferring to University of Utah, and graduating in zoology in 1949. He graduated with his Doctorate of Medicine in 1954 from the U of U then completed his internship and residency in Chicago in 1956. He was drafted into the U.S. Navy and held the rank of Lieutenant serving as the fleet physician for 4 destroyers stationed out of Camp Pendleton, CA.
Great Falls, Montana was the place he and his wife, Ann, chose to raise their family and begin his private medical family practice. He practiced privately until 1990 and then worked for the Great Falls Clinic until 1994, when he and Ann moved to Saint George, Utah. Al delivered close to 3000 babies during his Great Falls years. He was licensed in Utah, California, and Montana, and was a member of the American Medical Association, the Montana Medical Association, the Cascade County Medical Association, the American Academy of Family Practice, the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis, and Phi Beta Pi. He was president of the following: Deaconess Hospital Medical Staff, Montana Academy of General Practice, Cascade County Medical Association, Mental Health Committee AAGP, and Montana Foundation for Medical Care. He also was VP of the Montana Foundation for Medical Care, Physician Advisor Director PSRO Montana, a member of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee for Montana Blue Shield, member of the Montana Deaconess Medical Center Executive Committee, and Chairman of the Department on General Practice for the MT Deaconess Medical Center. He earned his Diplomate American Board of Family Practice in 1971 and held membership in the AAFP until he passed away.
Al was instrumental in helping to open the IHC Doctors Volunteer Clinic in St. George, Utah, and helped to raise funds for the clinic building. He practiced 1-2 days a week for the past 15 years until just a couple months ago. He was active in the LDS church and served in many leadership positions, as well as working in the temple baptistery and serving as a part-time missionary in the Saint George Family History Center. Gardening, fishing, snow and waterskiing, golfing, traveling, being with family, and breathing the fresh Montana air were his favorite pastimes. His laugh was infectious.
Alton is survived by his wife, Ann Louise, 4 children, John (Susan) Ross, Carlsbad, CA; Linda Ross, American Fork, UT; Robert (Lori) Ross, Highland, UT; and Kristina (David) McGuire, Cedar City, UT; 18 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren. Our husband, dad, grandpa, doctor, generous friend, trusted confidant, wise advisor and hero will be missed greatly. We wish you the best on this new mission, Dad.
We express heartfelt thanks to the wonderful doctors, nurses, and other staff at Dixie Regional for taking such loving care of our father and husband.
