He entered the Naval Service at an early age, his first ship being the old war-going "Calliope". In 1825 he obtained his premotion; and previous to the formation of a settlement in Auckland, he was wrecked in H.M. ship "Buffalo" of which vessel he was a purser. He was also formerly a purser in Her Majesty's Mary. Upon the arrival of Governor Hobson, he was requested to remain in the Colony and to undertake the Office of Colonial Storekeeper. To this he consented, occupying that position for several years. In 1846 he returned to England, where he was shortly afterwards appointed Paymaster and Purser of H.M. Steam-sloop "Archeron" - a post which ill health compelled him to relinquish about 12 months later.

He was appointed to the Office of Colonial Storekeeper of New Zealand in 1840.

He married Elizabeth HOWELL on 16 November 1817 at South Wraxall, Wiltshire, England

Their only daughter, Emma Mary TUCKER married George Manners Sutton MITFORD at St Barnabas Church, Parnell, Auckland on 28 February 1854. She died on 24 May 1859, aged 30 - and her husband died in London, England in 1905.
Henry and his wife also had at least two sons, the youngest, as chief mourner at his funeral.

His second marriage was to Emily Mary Elizabeth STANLEY (born SHIELL) on 17 December 1845 at St Paul's Church, Symonds Street, Grafton, Auckland, New Zealand. After Henry's death, Emily married Frederick BRATHWAITE (Assistant Commissary General) on 29 October 1857 at St Barnabas Church, Parnell, Auckland, New Zealand. She is interred in Symonds Street Cemetery.

He died at his late residence, Woodland Villa, near Auckland, and interred August 28, aged 57 years.
His coffin, covered with a Union Jack, and surmounted with his hat and sword being carried to the grave by a party of Blue Jackets landed for that purpose.
