She was born Jan. 21, 1909, in Mechanicsburg, the daughter of John Miller and Celeste Ellen Hallam Crane. She was a member of Mechanicsburg Christian Church and Bridge Club.
When Ethel was a young girl, the school district serving the Mechanicsburg area did not include a senior year. Since it wasn't available locally, the Mechanicsburg school district paid for Ethel's senior year at University High School in Normal. From the time of her departure at the age of 17 years until her retirement in 1974, she only returned to the Mechanicsburg area for summer visits. She received her master's degree from Illinois State University.
Ethel was the principal at Oak Grove Elementary School in Decatur for 13 years. She moved to Hammond, Ind., and then to South Port, Ind., where she retired. She was an educator for a total of 45 years, from 1929 to 1974. She traveled worldwide during many of her summer vacations. She was always hungry to learn. Because of this and her many stories of teaching, she was a very interesting person to know and love.
She was preceded in death by her eight brothers and sisters, Bertie Orlin Crane, Abner Harlie Crane, Charles Henry Crane, George Wilbur Crane, Ora Mae Hart, Alice Beulah Bell, Vietta Maria Green and Hazel Corrine Crane.
Surviving are her many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and -nephews and great-great-nieces and -nephews.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until time of funeral services at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 28, 2007, at Fullenwider-Park Funeral Home in Mechanicsburg. Burial will be in Mechanicsburg Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Menard Convalescent Center or the Alzheimer's Association.
