Mary Ann Barr was born the daughter of Elizabeth and William Barr, a soldier stationed with the 26th Regiment at the Rock of Gibralter. She was born either at sea or on the Rock of Gibraltor. She was baptized at Gibralter on 09 October, 1814. When she was 8 years old the family moved back to Scotland where she later lived with an aunt and learned dressmaking.
She married John Yuill in Glascow in 1840. Their first son, John Yuill, was born 11 Jul 1841 in Glascow, lived only 20 days and died 31 Jul 1841. They then emmigrated to Canada living first in Montreal, Quebec. A second son named John Yuill born 3 Jul 1843 in Montreal, survived only 6 days and died 9 Jul 1843. Five more children were born in Montreal: Mary Ann, Marion, John Barr, William and Robert. The Yuills then settled in Sarnia, Ontario where 3 more children, Alexander, Martha and Annie were born.
Mary Ann died 9 Apr 1874 in Sarnia, Ontario. She was preceded in death by her 2 infant sons, and 1 adult son, John Barr Yuill in 1872. She was buried there in Canada, but at this time her grave or cemetery has not been located.
