US Congressman. He graduated from Indiana Asbury (now De Pauw) University in 1844 and became a teacher. In 1850 he graduated from Louisville Law School and was admitted to the bar. He was a Circuit Court Judge from 1861 to 1862. Durham was elected to the US House in 1872 and reelected in twice, serving from 1873 to 1879. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1878 and resumed practicing law. In 1885 Durham was appointed First Comptroller of the United States Treasury and continued in office until the position was discontinued in 1889. He then relocated to Lexington and became involved in banking. In 1901 he was appointed to a position in the Lexington office of the Internal Revenue Service, a position which he still held when he died.
