Benjamin James Monroe was born at Montrose, a house that once stood on Berry Hill. He was educated at the B.B. Sayre School and at Western Military Academy at Drennon Springs, Henry County, KY. Monroe enlisted on August 24, 1861 at Camp Burnett, TN as a Captain in the CSA. On September 21, 1861 he was commissioned into "E" Co. 4th Kentucky Infantry. At Shiloh he received a serious leg wound (he was listed as: Wounded 4/6/1862 Shiloh, TN.). He accepted a furlough to try to regain his health at his aunt's house in Marshall County, MS, but failed to recover. He died there at the age of 26. After the war his remains were reinterred in Frankfort Cemetery, Franklin County, KY.
