A PIONEER WOMAN DIES
MRS SARAH JANE KARR EXPIRES
Had Lived in Central Illinois Since 1864-Leaves Eight Surviving Children
Mrs Sarah Jane Karr, one of the oldest women in the city or county, died at 6 o'clock Sunday evening at the home of her daughter, Mrs Grace Gossett, 703 North McLean Street. Her death was due to the natural exhaustion of her vital powers, for she had suffered no ailment even up to the last days. Her limit of physical endurance had been reached, and the functions ceased, without pain or struggle.

Mrs Karr was born at Petersburg, Howell County[sic], Virginia, October 27, 1828. Her family name was Guinn [sic]. When she was a child the family moved to Hamilton County, Indiana, where she was married to Arthur C Karr on December 25, 1848. They lived there until 1855, when they removed to Des Moines, Iowa, and in 1864 they came back to Illinois and settled at Wapella. In 1893 Mrs Karr became a resident of McLean County and had resided here since that time.

Mr Karr, the husband, died eighteen years ago. There were nine children, eight of whom still survive, as follows: Philip A Kar, of Normal, former superintendent of the county farm; John W Karr, of Nickerson, Kas; Mrs Elizabeth A Carpenter, of Fargo, Okla; Mrs Emma E Holt, of San Francisco; Henry H Karr, of Farmer City; William C Karr, of Vermont, Ill; Samuel W Karr, of Peoria, and Mrs Grace Gossett, of this city. One son, Robert, died in infancy. There are eleven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Mrs Karr was a member of the Christian church at Wapella. Prior to joining that organization, she had been a member of the Methodist Church.

Mrs Karr was one of the typical pioneer women who have made the central west out of the raw wilderness, working side by side with their husbands and sons. She was capable of doing a man's work on the farm and could plow, drive horses, pitch hay, and hunt for game to keep the family in meat before the days of modern distributing systems. Her rugged health and strong physique stood her in good stead, and she never suffered a day's serious illness in all her 88 years of life.

The funeral will be held on Tuesday morning from the home of her daughter. The body will be taken to Long Point Cemetery by auto, if the roads are good, by interurban if the weather is stormy.

NOTE:
According to her obituary said she was born in Petersburg, Howell County, Virginia, there is no Howell Co in Virginia or West Virginia, but there was a Petersburg in Dinwiddle County and Prince George County that is now a City-County Government.
