Jens Ahlman Simonsen was born in Vraa, Hjorring County, Denmark in 1894. His parents were Louisa and Julius Simonsen and he had ten siblings. Jens worked with farmers until he joined the Danish army in World War I. He married Johanna Thomsen in Hellevad parish on April 23, 1918. Ahlman and Johanna started their life together on a small farm and their daughter, Harriett and first son Egon were born there. With Johanna's brother Carl, and his family, they all immigrated to the US with their children Harriet and Egon in the summer of 1927. They arrived on the steamship Hellig Olav at Ellis Island, July 3rd of that year. At first, Ahlman worked with his brother-in-law in Minnesota as a brick layer and the children spent the summer learning to speak English. However, Ahlman wanted to farm, so they arrived by train in Avoca and eventually rented a farm. Their youngest son Paul Norman was born in 1932, a citizen of the United States. Ahlman and Johanna settled in Avoca and they were married for 63 years. They were active members of Trinity Lutheran Church of Avoca.
